Earlier this week, UN Special Representative for Iraq and head of of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI), Mr. Jan Kubis met with prominent Iraqi tribal leader and PAFI President Sheikh Jamal al-Dhari.
The two discussed a wide range of issues pertaining to the current situation in Iraq. Sheikh Jamal al-Dhari updated Mr. Kubis on the current political and security situation in Iraq and the ways to deal with the impact of the crisis on the region and the world.
Mr. Kubis reviewed the results of a significant meeting that took place on 2 September in the Qatari capital, Doha, between many different Iraqi Sunni groups. The meeting was opened by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, Mr. Khalid bin Mohammad al-Attiyah. Official representatives of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates were also in attendance.
Mr. Kubis praised those who participated in the meeting and declared the readiness of the United Nations to show all possible assistance to ensure the unity and sovereignty of Iraq.
